Item #201 - Two unidentified happy women, wearing big hats, no date, studio, or location. The photo was in a postcard format.
Item #202 - Unidentified man and woman, on a doorstep, ca 1930’s, no date, studio, or location listed.
Item #203 - Ruth Lavik (Funk), Arizona. At first I didn’t know who this was, but saw the southwestern building style, and forwarded it to Kay Funk, the daughter of Ruth Lavik Funk, in December, 2009. She wrote back: “Definitely my mother, Ruth Lavik. I look just like her. I have never seen this photo before. It is taken in front of their house at 1185 South Maple, Tempe. It is an historic house because the first house in Tempe with air conditioning!!!!! They had interesting stories about Arizona in the 30’s. - Kay Funk” Ruth was born in 1923. Her age, as well as the photo finishing type, places this photo in the 1930’s sometime.
Item #204 - Two men, two women, a child, outdoors, no date, studio, or location. Poor quality.
Item #205 - One man, two women, poor quality, no date, studio, or location. I tried to edit this photo, and except for bringing out the man in the middle a little, it was of such poor quality that I could not improve it much.
Item #206 - Young man, no date, studio, or location. There are a number of photos printed this way in various family collections I am familiar with - including the next tem – a square flipped to one side. From the others that were in this style, it is my general estimate that they were of the 1890’s.
Item #207 - Two Unidentified women, no date, studio, or location. This is in the same style as the previous photo, and quite possibly from the 1890’s.
Item #208 - Four Unidentified Women, no date, studio, or location. The woman that is second from left does look like one of the Lavik daughters - it would be Marie if that were the case.
Item #209 - Island in a river, unknown location, studio, or date.
Item #210 - Stone Arch Bridge, France. There was some writing on the bottom of the front of the photo. It is still hard to make out, but after scanning the writing separately and enhancing it, it appears to read “Stone Arch – near Bouinville, France – 10 – 1 - ?”. That enhancing copy of the writing is posted below. Mike Collins provided a quote from Rudy Lavik’s World War I writing: “"Yesterday my detachment was moved to this place which is about two kilo's east of Thiacourt and five from Boulionville." Mike further wrote: “When Rudy Lavik was in France he was stationed near Boulionville (various spellings in his letter). Scanned photo #210 may read Boulionville France or some such variation. The style of the photo could be from WWI and Rudy was with an engineering company, so it might fit.” The date of Rudy’s letter describing Boulionville, which Mike quotes from above, is January 10, 1919, which may mean that the date written below the photo is in European style – the day before the month. It would match the writing on the photo.
Item #211 - Unidentified women and man, with car, no studio listing, date or location. The woman does look like Antonette Lavik.
Item# 212 - Eight Unidentified Young Women, girls outdoors, shown in ascending order of height, house in the background, no studio, date or location.
Item #213 - Unidentified band member with uniform and musical instrument in front of steps, with young child at top of steps in the background.
Item #214 - Dorothy and Howard Nelson, outdoors, no date or location. This photograph was identified by Joyce Tsongas.
Item #215 - Nine Unidentified people outdoors, in a rocky park area, unknown date or location.
Item #216 - Unidentified Sailor outdoors, in uniform, no date, studio, or location. It is possible that the period where this style of uniform was in use would be helpful – but I am not sure how to develop that information.
Item #217 - Two unidentified men outdoors in winter, sitting on fence. No identification or date. This goes with Item #200, which is two couples in the same location – and appears to be at least one of the two men in that photo. The left man in this photo looks like he could be Rudy Lavik – but it’s unclear if a photo of this period is the right time frame to match Rudy’s age. The photo is not on card stock – but in a more traditional slick finish developed, which may mean it’s into the mid-1920’s or the 1930’s.
Item #218 - Young Unidentified Man, unknown location, studio, or date. It looks like it’s of an older period–maybe the 1880’s or so.
Item #219 - Unidentified Young Boy on Pony, no date, studio, or location.
Item #220 - Unknown school class in front of school with teacher, mountains in background, no date - I posted it as the header on this page.. With mountains that high in the photo – there are not such mountains in the Dakotas, so it is likely that this is from one of the Laviks who was working in Colorado or another mountainous location. Since it is a woman in the background, this is likely Hannah Lavik, who was listed in her family biography as having taught outside of Spokane, Washington.
Item #221 - Three young men, no date or location. Mike Collins suggests that the young man on the lower right matches Theodore Lavik from photo #79. This appears to be a good guess, as if this is Theodore, he is starting to look like his brothers as he got older. Theodore died at age 23 in 1920 while at Concordia – in the influenza epidemic.
Item #222 - Unidentified Woman in glasses, seated in chair, no date, studio, or location.
Item #223 - Unidentified man, eight women, outdoors, no date, studio, or location. Obviously, this is in a city, not in the country. A closeup of the people is shown at upper right, scanned at a higher resolution. It is possible that the women are dressed as health workers.
Item #224 - Unidentified Young Man, No date, studio, or location. Maybe it's the mustache, but he looks like some of the men in other photos.
Item #225 - Unidentified Man, No date, studio, or location.
Item #226 - One man shaving another, pennants of Iowa and Valley City ion background, no date or location. This appears to be the same location at the picture in Item #266 – which shows the same Valley City pennant in the background. In that photo there are three young men – and in this photo two. It appears that it could be a dorm situation, and in the other photo, one of the young men looks like it could be Rudy Lavik.
Item #227 - Unidentified baby, no date, studio, or location.
Item #228 - Unidentified Man, taken by C. R. Moen, Peterson, Minnesota, shown at right. The scan below is a close-up of the photographer’s name and city – enhanced by brightening it to bring out the letters. The Minnesota directory shows a studio for Carl Robert Moen in Peterson, Minnesota in the period of 1903 to 1914. Peterson, Minnesota is in Fillmore County in south eastern Minnesota. A photo in Item #46 was taken in Spring Valley, Fillmore County. Matilda Ofstedahl, widow of Nils, was in this county for a period of time
Item #229 - This is likely Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota. I have added a more modern-day photo of the seminary, caught by Mike Collins and posted to the right - which seems to prove the match. Many Lavik family members attended Luther Seminary, including Andrew Lavik, Ingvald Lavik, and Dora Lavik’s husband Carl Grimsrud, among others. Andreas, Nils, and John Ofstedahl - Rasmus’ three nephews who went into the ministry - all attended Luther Seminary, but while it was in Madison, Wisconsin before it moved to St. Paul, Minnesota.
Item #230 - Unidentified woman, hair up, high collar with broach, wearing glasses, no date, studio, or location. I have enlarged this photo to bring out the features of the person and dress.
Item #231 - Eight unidentified women outdoors, no date, studio, or location. I tried to enhance this photo, and it was too difficult to really improve it. I was wondering if this was a match to Item #223 - but none of these women have nursing hats and many seem younger than the women in that photo.
Item #232 - Unidentified Young Man, Outside, in Cap and Gown, undated.
Item #233 - Unidentified Young Woman, No Date, Studio, or Location.
Item #234 - Postcard, Football players, one man is holding a football and has a “C” on his shirt – which likely stands for Concordia. No place or date otherwise indicated. Joyce Tsongas identified this photo as “Concordia football”. Rudy Lavik was a student at Concordia from 1913 to 1917, and was a coach there in 1920-1922. It’s possible this was the team one year when he was a coach. Item #129 is a photo of Rudy Lavik with “scrubs” of his team. There are eighteen people in each photo, and each are presented as a postcard. The first one has a note from Rudy on the message side, this postcard does not. Rudy is apparent in the Item #129 photo, but is not apparent in this one.
Item #235 - Two unidentified very young children outside on doorstep, no date, studio, or location listed. These toddlers are dressed alike, and look like twins.
Item #236 - Unidentified Group of Dressed Up Young Men and Women, No date, studio, or location. The man in the back row, second from right, appears to be Anton Lavik. According to John R. Lavik’s biography of Anton - Anton attended Concordia College, but that biography also seems to indicate he was called home to run the farm before he finished college. This photo appears to be of a graduation or special occasion.
Item #237 - Unidentified two young Girls and One Young Boy, No Date, Studio, or Location.
Item #238 - Unidentified Young Man, taken by Axel Carlson, Wheaton, Minnesota. This is the seventh of eight photos taken in the Axel Carlson Studio in Wheaton. I still have not figured out the family or the relationship to the Laviks.
Item #239 - Unidentified Young Man, Sumner and Son photographer, Northfield, Minnesota. This photographer described with photo #171, which means it’s likely in the 1900-1920 period. The scan below is a close-up of this photographer’s label. Many Laviks and friends, and family members were students at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
Item #240 - Unidentified Man and Woman, No Date or Location. The item at the right is the marking in the lower left corner, which I originally thought might be related to a photographic studio. It is not.
