Where the extended Rasmus Lavik Famly Lived

The public domain map above covers many of the Upper Midwest locations where the Extended Rasmus Lavik Family lived - as described in the information posted on this web page. At the south of the map is Aberdeen, South Dakota. Just above it is Ellendale, North Dakota. To the east is Oakes, Forman, and Wahpeton - the location of many of the photos. The Rasmus Lavik home of Milnor is just east of Forman. At the top of the map is Grafton and Pembina, North Dakota. To the middle in the east is Crookston, where southeast of there is Fertile and Rindal. To the west from Grand Fork is Devils Lake. And just east of Fargo is Moorhead. These locations, and many smaller cities nearby are where many of the photos in the Lavik Collection were taken.

The Extended Rasmus Lavik Family - Who They Were And Where They Lived

Many of the Lavik photos had identifying studio and studio location listings.  I concluded that it would be helpful to research each member of Rasmus’ family, and where and when they have lived places during their lives.  By identifying each member of the family of Rasmus’ children, it might help identify families by knowing what gender and age order each child was, to see if that matched unidentified children in a photo.

The same is true for the families of people related to the Lavik family.  For example, there are a number of photos here of Antonette’s family from Devils Lake, and information on those family members is included below.  It is possible that some of the photos are of the Tuff family, with Ingeborg Tuff being Rasmus’ first wife.  There were also a few photos of Ofstedahls, and it took one descendant to identify the one of Andrew Ofstedahl here.  There also is a likely photo of someone who was in an in-law family (the Steinbergs took the one known photo that was of Sophie Bergh Lavik’s family – which was what motivated their initial interest in these photos).  Some of Rasmus’ siblings immigrated, and it is possible that there are photographs of them or their children.

Therefore, in addition to Rasmus and his immediate family, I have included a listing of Ingeborg and Antonette’s families, of the initial Ofstedahls, and of Rasmus’ siblings – to make sure they are added to the locations listed below.  Any one of them could be a subject of one of the photos in the Lavik batch – and with the help of others I have already identified different members of the Ofstedahl family, and one photo of Rasmus’ brother Knut.

It should be noted that the latest photos in the Lavik collection were in the 1930’s – so paying too close attention to locations of family members after 1940 isn’t particularly relevant to the photos.

I will begin with a complete listing for Rasmus and his children and their families, as well as his siblings and those families that have intermarried. I know this is a lot of text, but it is a comprehensive listing of who was in the Lavik orbit, and I place the individual names in bold:

 The Simon and Agatha Lavik Ofstedahl Family

Anders Simonson (Flatekval) Ofstedal married Agate Lavik (Rasmus Lavik’s oldest sister in 1844, probably in Eksingedalen, Norway.  They had eleven children, seven of whom lived to adulthood and all seven emigrated to the United States:

            Simon Anderson Ofstedal – March 30, 1848 – May 7, 1892 (Polk Co., MN) m. Kari Tuff (sister of Rasmus’ first wife Ingeborg) – Oct 11, 1859 – April 29, 1916 (Polk Co., MN) – Twelve children

Torbjorg Lavik, Sister of Rasmus

Torbjorg Lavik – 1832-1896 (?) – never married; no issue; immigrated to the United States in 1878 with the Ofstedahls; She was enumerated with Rasmus Lavik and family in 1880 in Goodhue County; she was with the Ofstedahls in the 1895 Minnesota state census in Polk County; While her death is listed in one record as 1906, the Norwegian bygdebok entry for her family lists her death year as 1896. I have found no public record of her after 1895, either census, death, or cemetery, although the photograph of Simon’s family earlier in this section has her name written on the back, and was taken about 1897. Rudy Lavik wrote a letter to his child and grandchildren in 1965 mentioning family history - and describes how Torbjorg stayed with them for a year “near the turn of the century” and “spoiled” his youngest brother Ted, who was not born until January 1897. She appears to have lived past the 1896 death date some researchers have used.

Knut Lavik Flatekval (Flakolls)

Knut Lavik (Flatekval) – the third child of Andres and Dordei, the first of two Knut Laviks that appear to be sons of Andres and Dordei – born in 1824 in Lavik, and died in 1896 in America.  He married Agate Knutsdatter Lavik (who died in 1879).   Basically, he was from one Lavik farm (Bruk One), Agate was of another (Bruk Five), and he bought a farm in the adjoining area of Flatekval – Bruk 5, which he bought in 1854 for 350 spd.   It states he and Agate had eleven children, two of whom died in Norway at a young age; two of whom remained in Norway, and he left for America in 1884, the remaining seven came to the United States (Paul Lavik’s records said nine children – the bygdebok states either eleven or twelve – but in each case just seven came alive to America):

1) Dordi, born in 1852 and died in 1910, one of two who remained in Norway;

2) Anna – who would have been the second oldest child, born in 1852 and died in 1854 – not shown in Paul Lavik’s records, one of two extras listed in the bygdebok records;

3) Andrea, born 1854 and died in 1910, married Nils Hovik, and listed as the other child who remained in Norway;

4) Anders, shown below, born on March 16, 1856 and died on January 23, 1903; he was known in the United States as Anders Flakoll; He immigrated in 1882, Teacher, Goodhue Co., Minn., 1884-86.  Attended Northfield Sem., 1889-90; Augsburg Sem., 1890-92 (C. T.).  Pastor, Aberdeen, Brown County, S. D., 1892-97; Bristol, Day County, S. D. 1897-03. *[married] Kristiane Helland, 1882.  Died Jan. 23, 1903. The 1900 census shows six living children, with two others having died before 1900.  Ole Teiten married Kristiane in 1909, and she died in 1941. [NOTE: There is an Anders Knutson shown with Rasmus Lavik in the 1880 census - age 24, born in Norway. That fits this Anders, but the listing for him in the 1928 pastor book indicates an immigration year of 1882, and his 1900 census entry indicates he immigrated in 1884 - the year his father is believed to have immigrated.]

5) Knute, the bygdebok shows two Knuts not in Paul’s records, born in 1857 and died in 1869 and the second one born in 1863 and died in 1870;

6) Anna K. Flakoll, born 1859, died in 1941 and married ca 1889 Clarence Horatio Fulton, born 1851; they had five children; she appears to have lived in Brown County until her death;

7) Johannes Lavik, born 1861, unknown death date; he appears to have witnessed his sister Anna’s wedding in 1889 in Brown County; There is a Johannes K. Flatekval who homesteaded near other family members in Brown County in 1885. In ordering deeds for Andrew Ofstedal from the Brown County recorder in the fall of 2020, I asked for any references to Johannes K. Flatkeval, and I was surprised to receive six different documents from deed books that references him. They all were from the 1880’s and 1890’s, although one of the transactions from the 1890’s was recorded after 1900. I have not found a reference for him in the 1900 census, so I don’t know what happened to him - the evidence seems to indicate he might have died during this period.

8) Maria K. Flakoll, born 1865, died 1916, married first Peter Helland and married second Severt Strand;

9) Gjertina Flatekval, born 1868 and died in 1940, married Torris (Tom) Jacobson;

10) Kristina K. Flatekval, born May 20, 1869, died February 12, 1914, married Adolph Kabrud, born October 4, 1860 and died July 25, 1914; and

11) Agatha Lavik, born 1874, died 1956 and married James Christian Anderson.

 Maria Lavik (Flatekval), sister of Rasmus

Maria Lavik, born in 1828, died in 1864, married Johannes Halvardson Flatekval in 1858.  Two children, Maria, born 1859, remained in Norway; Halvord (or Halvor), born 1861.  Halvor J. Flatekval filed for land in Dakota Territory near the Ofstedahls and Anna K. Flatekval in April 1886, but did not prove out his claim.  A bygdebok states he went to America, married, and had children.  I cannot find a further record for him.
