Introduction to the Kinneys and the Sargents

Nathaniel Kinney (spelled also Keeny) married Barbara Sargeant in the mid-1790’s, possibly in Frederick County, Maryland - and were my fourth great-grandparents. The War of 1812 record at left for Nathaniel is the only known record for him in the period he was in Frederick County between 1796 and 1815.

His ancestry was from Northumberland County, Pennsylvania - and maybe even New Jersey before that. Barbara was the daughter of George Sargent. This page will cover both the Sargents and the Kinneys - with pages of the “brick wall” earliest known ancestors - George Sargent In Frederick County and possibly Jacob Kinney in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Then I hope for pages on the Nathaniel Kinney and Barbara Sargent and their nine children and seven of Barbara’s siblings - as they all moved to Knox County Ohio just after the War of 1812.

The Kinneys . . . .

My great-grandmother, Sarah “Sadie” Kinney (Clawson), mother of my grandmother Edna (Clawson) Laird, was my closest Kinney ancestor. Her father was William Harrison “Harry” Kinney, born in 1840 - the year that William Harrison was elected President. He married Harriet “Hattie” Crill, and they had five children, most of whom remained in the Knox County, Ohio area. Harry’s father was David Kinney, son of Nathaniel Kinney, the original ancestor - whose War of 1812 service card is shown above.

Nathaniel, prior to moving with his family to Knox County Ohio ca 1815, is a bit of an ancestral mystery. His oldest child was born in Maryland - likely ca 1797 - and likely in Frederick County. However, there are no records of him there except for the record of his service in the War of 1812. A Morrow County history contains a biography of his daughter Sarah - which states that her father was from Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Prior to putting up this website, I did a scrapbook of Kinney history, focusing primarily on the five children of Harry Kinney - as my grandmother had a number of photographs of them. I hope to put up pages on this site with a version of that scrapbook. Additionally, I hope to do a page on Jacob Kinney - the one Kinney in early Northumberland County who might be related to Nathaniel. Over time, it is possible that there will be other Kinney information posted here. I have done work on each of the children of Nathaniel that I was able to track and research.

The Sargents . . . .

Nathaniel’s wife was Barbara Sargent. She appears to have been the daughter of George Sargent of Frederick County, Maryland, who is the earliest known ancestor of the Sargent line. Barbara and seven of her siblings moved to Knox County Ohio ca 1815. I have done extensive research on George Sargent - tracking every record of he and his children in Frederick County, Maryland, trying to draw conclusions about his life and ancestry from them. That information is now posted as the “George Sargent Ancestry” web page on this site.

Once the Sargents moved to Ohio, it appears that they did not own significant property or were otherwise throughout local records. Based on the limited records, I have a worksheet that tries to determine who were the children of each Sargent sibling. I will post that here as well when I tune it up.

I have also done research on the next two generations of Sargent descendants on lines other than Barbara’s and eventually I hope to be able to post some of that information on this page. Until that happens, I am happy to answer any inquiries on these Sargent lines.
