Descendants of William Priest of Culpeper County, Virginia

William Priest is our earliest known ancestor of the Priest line. He was first shown in a record in Culpeper County in 1763. His last tax entry was ca 1793 in Culpeper County. He had five known children, four of whom we know by name. His son Stanley appears to have died in Culpeper County after 1800. His three other sons - Jeremiah, John, and William - all enlisted in the Revolutionary army from Culpeper County, each filed an application for a revolutionary war pension, and each of the three moved to Ohio for the last decades of their lives. An unnamed daughter, a fifth child, was with William Jr. at the time of his pension application in Ohio ca 1818.

There has been confusion about William and his children, due to the absence of many records from this period in Virginia.  There has been no land record for William’s acquisition of his residence in Culpeper County, there is no probate record, and there are no surviving marriage records.  While there were some property records, and tax records, some of what we know comes from pension records and other records after they left Virginia.

There has also been confusion about some of the grandchildren of William. I have worked through various records and tried to identify clearly those grandchildren.  There is a companion page of all records for our Priest line in Culpeper County between that first record of William Sr. in 1763 and the last record of John’s family before they moved to Ohio ca 1812.  That companion page contains tax records which shed some light on the children of John Priest Sr.  

On line ancestry.com public member trees list William Priest’s birth as in England. It also lists his wife as . I have yet to document from other records this information, and therefore have not included it here. I am happy to receive any documentation that proves these facts.

My own connection is from William Priest Sr. to his son Jeremiah Priest to his son Obediah Priest to his daughter Nancy Priest. Nancy married Jesse Laird (his second wife) in Dearborn County, Indiana in 1838. She and Jesse had six children (he had nine by his first wife). Jesse died in 1865 and Nancy and three of her sons moved to Danville, Illinois, establishing the Lairds there - where my father grew up - and where there are descendants to this day. The Chart below contains the four generations of our Priests beginning with the patriarch William. Notes have been added to explain certain family placements. Jeremiah Priest’s family is clearest, because of his probate in Clark County Ohio and the listing of his children (the beginning of his will is the header on this page). John and William have been more difficult to clearly ascertain each child. A fifth child, an unnamed daughter, is named in William Jr.’s pension file. It is stated that she has a daughter and the daughter has six children - but there are no names attached.  Detective work on this family has led to the chart below.  Even though this chart is comprehensive, I hope there is more we can prove and add.  Any additions or corrections are welcome and encouraged - there is a contact feature on this website.

Generation 1

1. WILLIAM1 PRIEST was born about 1725. He died about 1793 in Culpeper, Virginia, USA. It is unclear what his wife’s name is - although some researchers believe it was Elizabeth Stanley.  All known records of William - various property, tax, and estate sale records from 1763 to 1793 - are recorded on the accompanying page about the entire Priest family in Culpeper County from 1763 to 1812.

William Priest had the following known children:

2. i. JOHN PRIEST was born in 1750 in Virginia, USA. He died about 1836 in Licking, Ohio, USA. He married Catherine “Caty” about 1771. She was born about 1755. She died after 1830.

John’s revolutionary war pension file - posted on the accompanying page - gives information about John. It states that he was born in Prince William County in 1750. He enlisted in 1778 and stated he was living two miles from the town of Washington in Culpeper County. He moved to Musklingum County, Ohio ca 1812, and then on to Fallsbury Township, Licking County, Ohio in 1817. He is shown in tax records there until 1831. His final revolutionary war payment was made in 1836.

Determining the wife and children of John Priest.  There is no probate record for John in Licking County, which has made it challenging to determine each of his children. In the last decade John and his family were in Culpeper County, some of his children began to appear in tax and property records. The William Priest who first appears in Culpeper tax records in 1791, is actually listed in the 1795 tax records as “son of John”.  John Jr. and James Priest appear in Culpeper tax records in the decade before the family left for Ohio.  Solomon Priest witnessed a Culpeper County deed in 1807.

Determining the wife and children of John Priest.  There is also confusion about who exactly was in John’s family and as seen below, researchers disagree on the matter.

Some Priest researchers have seemed to link John with Peter Priest – as his son – and place our John’s marriage to Elizabeth Brown.  This is likely the John Priest who WAS the son of Peter Priest, but isn’t our John.  One such researcher is George Ely Russell, who shows John marrying Elizabeth Brown and having eleven children: John Priest and Rodham Priest, twins, George, Mason, Nelson, Thomas, William, Mary, Sallie, Elizabeth, and Nancy Priest.  And an application to the DAR by Bessie Corder Barnes of New Orleans in 1955 makes the same case – that John of Culpeper was the son of Peter and the father of the eleven children just listed.

This assertion does not seem to match any known records of John Sr. in Culpeper County or Ohio and must be another family.  Rodham, a son of the John who was married to Elizabeth Brown, was mentioned in Culpeper County probate records of his wife’s father’s estate and in Bourbon County, Kentucky at the same time as John Sr.’s brother Jeremiah in the 1790’s, but they did not appear to be there together. John provides some of the confusion by listing his birth location as Prince William County, implying he was tied to Priests other than the Culpeper Priests, and Prince William County being listed by researcher Peggy Hill as the likely birthplace of at least one of the Priests of the Thomas line that is confused with this John.

Our John shows up with deeds listing his wife as “Catey” and Catherine – both in Culpeper and Muskingum County deeds – and the name Catherine repeats in future generations of Priests in Ohio.  It is clear that his wife’s name was Catherine, not Elizabeth.

There are two children linked to John in Culpeper County tax records, William and John Jr.  There are others who are shown in Culpeper records and were not children of Jeremiah or William Jr.  – and who later are with John’s line in Ohio – James and Solomon Priest.  These four seem clear to be children of John Sr., and are a good starting point for determining who his children were.  The question is who else would have been children of John Sr.

A complicating factor in determining the rest of John’s children is the possibility that two of John Sr.’s oldest children had children themselves at the time that John and Catherine were still having children, confusing the issue.  If John and Catherine’s oldest son William was in fact born ca 1772 or 1773, he would have been old enough to be married and the father of the three likely daughters of John and Catherine – Lucinda, Catherine, and Susan – who were born in the 1790’s.  But there is no known evidence for that.

The second major issue with the older children is the purported age of John Sr.’s son John Jr. and John Jr.’s wife Dorcas.  John Jr. first shows up in Culpeper County tax records as the son of John, ca 1801.  The other child of John to show up in tax records – and specifically be linked to him – is William, who first is listed with John in 1791. If John Jr. first shows up in records because he came of age at about the time he showed up in the records, that would place his birth year closer to 1780. 

John Jr.’s 1810 census record shows him under between twenty-six and forty-five that year, making his birth year between 1765 and 1784.  There are two women in the same entry – a woman over forty-five, meaning she was born before 1765, and one between the ages of sixteen and twenty-six, or with a birth year between 1784 and 1794.  Dorcas’s 1830 entry places her age between fifty and sixty – or her birth year between 1770 and 1780.  Her late in life entries and tombstone place her birth date in the mid 1760’s – even though the earlier census records place her birth year in the 1770’s.  John did not show up in Culpeper County records as having come of age until a time that shows he was probably born roughly fifteen years after the age Dorcas claimed at her death. 

My suspicion if that if John Sr. was born ca 1750, and his first son to show up as of age in tax records was William – probably his oldest son and named for his father – was born ca 1773, it is likely John Jr.s was born after that.  This is a significant issue – because if John Jr. was born ca 1780, it rules out him as a father of certain Priests that some researchers have attributed as children of him, and were born in Virginia prior to 1800.

In addition to William, John Jr., James, and Solomon – there were other Priests in early Licking County records who were born prior to 1800 and would fit the timeframe to be John Sr.’s children.  Isaac Norman was with John in Licking County property and tax records, and has been said to have married Delphia Priest – who later census and cemetery records indicate was born in the 1788-89 period.  Lucinda, who married Toliver Thrailkill, was born in the 1791-94 period.  Catherine, who married John Dush and for whom it makes sense to be a child of John and Catherine because she would have been named for her mother, was likely born in the 1794-95 period.  Susan, who married Adam Dush, was born ca 1799.  Levi Priest was shown as born ca 1780. 

This bring us to the next issue – looking at Priests that show up in early Ohio records that were of the age to be the children of John Sr. and were born before 1800. Six Priest children were married in Muskingum County, Ohio between 1811 and 1815 – Lucinda, Catherine, James, Levi, Presley, and Susan.  If William and John Priest, sons of John Priest Sr., came of age between 1790 and 1800, it means that all these were likely children of John Priest Sr.  Presley Priest married Melinda Priest, who would more likely have been a widow of a young Priest, or the daughter of a Priest that would have made her Presley’s cousin, although none seem to fit here.  All these Priests appear to have been in Licking County later, as was John.  

By the 1820 census, James Priest was shown in Perry Township of Licking County, Ohio; and Lewis and William Priest were shown in Hopewell Township of Muskingum County, Ohio.  The entries of James and William each contained a male and female over the ages of forty-five.  Complete details on each of these Priests are shown below in the individual sections on each.

It is also significant that two of the candidates to be children of John Priest were involved in land transactions with him in Ohio.  Isaac Norman (married to John’s daughter Delphia), owned land with John for the years they were both alive together in Licking County as “tenants in common”.   John Dush, married to John’s daughter Catherine, was involved in a land transaction adjacent to John in Muskingum County on the same day for an adjacent parcel.  This probably links both in a strong way to John.

Between the census and the marriage records – the following Priests, not apparently the children of Jeremiah or William Sr., were likely born in Virginia prior to 1800: Delphia, Catherine, Presley, Lucinda, Levi, and Susan.  So by the power of deduction and adding these other six to the original four – leads to starting with William, John Jr., James, Solomon, Delphia, Lucinda, Catherine, Levi, Ripley, and Susan as ten known children of John Priest Sr. and his wife Catherine.

Researchers I was in touch with in the 1990’s, and researchers who published Priest information prior to that, have confused John with another John Priest. That John Priest was the son of Peter Priest. They have most details correct about that John Priest - but they have used details about our John from his pension file - his birth and his revolutionary war service - and attributed them to the other John Priest. That is not correct.

John’s death date did confuse researchers in my early Priest research. Posted below is his final revolutionary war pension payment card, showing that it was made in the second quarter of 1836:
